How BJJ Students of All Levels Have Learned To Even The Odds Against Younger, More Athletic Training Partners, Reduce Injuries, and Cut Their Learning Curve In Half!
The answer has nothing to do with “old man power.” It all comes down to understanding the correct technical approach and training strategies to keep you healthy and progressing – no matter your age! Stephen Whittier’s Founder of 40 Plus BJJ Success and 3rd degree BJJ Black Belt
“If you’ve ever fantasized about keeping up with the younger, super-athletic “mat rats” at your school and supercharging your learning curve while putting less strain on your body, this is the book for you (or becoming a “Seniors Division” grappling machine in competition)…
Then you’re going to enjoy what I’m about to share with you here!”
“I’m gettin’ too old for this [email protected]$T!” most of us have said or thought at some time (it’s the Jiu-Jitsu version of Danny Glover’s iconic phrase from Lethal Weapon).
The truth is that even if you worked hard to keep fit and in the game, things change once you become a “older” grappler…
You have more obligations than most of the young people you train with (and you can’t always live on the mat like the guys in their twenties and thirties);
You recover more slowly from intense exercises and injuries, and unless you have a significant advantage in experience and talent, you frequently feel like you are “second fiddle” to the younger, more athletic pupils in your school.
And, let’s face it, even if you enjoy jiu-jitsu, it can be really irritating!
But what about the solution? “Old Man Power?” No! Why would you want to rely on physical characteristics that will inevitably deteriorate over time?
Moreover, contrary to popular belief…
It’s More Than Just “More Mat Time”
Although more time on the mat is always a big part of improving your Jiu-Jitsu game, it irritates me when people tell me that their instructor just says “keep training” despite the fact that they’re getting smashed day in and day out!
Here’s the issue… Anyone who says it’s ALL about getting more mat time is implying that all mat time is created equal. Not so!
Unless you are one of those “freak athletes,” it will take a long time to become proficient in BJJ if you train in the traditional “learn a few techniques then roll” method. To get things moving faster, you must first master the fundamental principles that power the Jiu-Jitsu engine!
That is why I created the 40 Plus BJJ program.
And I’m pleased to report that the response has been absolutely overwhelming…
Here are just a few examples of many.
More than 40 BJJ Success Stories…
“I started training in my late 30s and am now over 40. I was nervous in the back of my mind: would I end up with a battered body and a bruised ego? Would I be able to hang out with a group of young men?
I never had those concerns again after I began training with Coach Steve…. At our school, I’ve seen students ranging in age from six to sixty. What I’ve learned from Steve has enabled me to compete on the mat with competitors my age or athletic guys in their twenties – and win! His coaching helped me win regional tournaments like NAGA, the IBJJF No Gi Pan Ams, the New York Open, the Boston Open (including the Absolute division), and even second place at the World’s!”
-Murphy, John
Thank you, Professor Stephen; this is gold! Your philosophy and methodology for the aging jiujitsu player are spot on. It keeps me relatively healthy on the mats. With the knowledge you’ve provided, the young athletic punks are much more manageable.
-Mr. Omar Rodriguez
Thank you for sharing your grappling techniques and grappling theory with older grapplers. I am sixty-six years old and recently competed in the “Big Apple Tournament,” where I finished second in the 40+ blue belt lightweight division. My BJJ training is very enjoyable for me. I train with men and women of all ages and weight classes. Individualized training and games for older people are required to make the most progress. As a result, the information you provide is extremely useful. Thank you once more.
-Thomas Corrie
Altough I am 35 years old and one of the gym’s senior practitioners. I always struggled to keep up with those younger guys. But not any longer. The information you’ve been sharing has been extremely beneficial. There has definitely been an improvement in my game. So much so that my coach is beginning to suspect that I am training elsewhere.
Thank you for sharing these ideas, Stephen.
They are greatly appreciated!
-M. Adrian
I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos and tips! As a 40-year-old Bjj practitioner, these have helped me refocus and motivate me to change my way of thinking! Thanks:)
-Joey McIntyre
Steve, I always appreciate the time you put in to provide great free content (I know it’s great because I use the principles and techniques in my own BJJ). As someone who has purchased your longer instructionals in the past, I can attest that they are always worth far more than the very reasonable price you charge. Your knowledge, whether free or paid, is always appreciated!

Some will argue that there is nothing to it… that these guys must train like everyone else, but only full-time, or be genetic freaks

It focuses on training methods that develop the fundamentals – that is, the aspects of the game that come before any technical series!

Here’s A Sample Of What You’ll Learn In This Comprehensive Series…
The crucial defensive posture details that distinguish “flat n’ smashed” from “survive n’ escape”
The “Frames 2.0” secrets… how to use minimal effort to slow down and frustrate your opponents even when you’re at the bottom (the minute they try to improve their position, you’ll be on your way out!)
The “shotput” detail that will instantly double the effectiveness of your underhook!
Learn how to avoid being pancaked while kneeling (these two methods alone will save you a lot of wear and tear on your body!)
With this super-sneaky knee bump technique, you can keep your opponents off-balance as they pass your guard – or even if they have gained a top position.
With the “Fan” Escape, you can dismantle even the biggest, strongest guy’s mount position!
That’s only the first volume… What about passing the guard?
Use the viciously effective “hip roll” detail to cement your base and posture inside closed guard (your opponents will think you stuffed your hips with lead) – this one alone is worth the admission price!
Learn how to disable the young speed demons who constantly move their hips as you try to breach their defenses.
Discover the one-step secret weapon rubber guard defense that neutralizes gumby guard-players before they even begin!
The reasons why learning guard passing through step-by-step techniques is sabotaging your progress are revealed.
With one simple drill, you can “crack the code” of even the most difficult guard players in your school (develop this “guard pummel” and watch the “butt floppers” fear go to their backs!)
Learn my infamous “Magic Grip” for controlling your opponent’s legs and hips – and keeping yourself safe in his guard (it’s so simple and effective you’ll kick yourself for not using it sooner…)
See how a “Pass to Mount” mentality (and skill set) can make your training partners feel like victims in a bad horror film!
Discover the key details and tweaks to three “classic” guard passing routes that will instantly double your passing success (the other guy will scratch his head and wonder what changed!).
The “Border Patrol” principle’s closely guarded secrets – and how to completely dominate inside position whether passing or playing guard.
The shoulder pressure secrets that will have even the toughest guys in your gym wide-eyed and desperate
Lockdown, shmockdown… two stunningly brutal ways to get out of this vexing stall position… You chill like Anthony Bourdain while cooking the guy on the bottom!
See why standing up is the best submission defense when inside an opponent’s guard (you just have to do it correctly or they’ll get exactly what they want).
With this simple move, you can stop even the most difficult x-guard and half-guard players. Hooks Beater (When I demonstrated the x-guard pass to a group of black belts at a training camp last year, they slapped themselves and exclaimed, “It can’t be this easy!”)
And when you’re fighting from your guard, you should:
Discover the “Must Know” 5-step open guard progression to speed up your game and save months to years of on-the-mat trial and error.
See why the upright guard posture is the foundation of a solid “40 plus” guard strategy (even if you prefer to attack from behind, you’ll learn how to do so on your own terms and save your body a lot of abuse…)
Learn tried-and-true tactics for recovering your guard even when your opponent has control of your legs – these tips alone can mean the difference between a pass that ends your match or one that allows you to maintain your guard and submit your opponent!
See how the simple Assisted Frame and Stayin’ Alive postures can quickly transform your half guard game from passive to dangerous!
With this complete threaded spider guard game (this super-effective series could be an entire instructional DVD in and of itself!) you can put the brakes on even the most explosive opponents.
Alternatively, how about developing SMASHING top-game pressure and high-percentage attacks…
Learn how to use “bait and switch” tactics to tighten the screws on an opponent just as he thinks he’s about to escape.
With these key “scramble busters,” you can cut your learning curve in half.
With my Power Positions strategy, you can develop an immobilizing top game (I’ll show you how to achieve – and maintain – dominant positions so you can focus on attacking rather than defending!)
How to make your top position and submission attacks one and the same (apply nerve shattering pressure with minimal risk that your opponents will escape, even if you don’t submit them the first time.)
Super-sneaky strategies for isolating your opponent’s arms and going for the kill – he’ll have no idea what’s going on until it’s too late!
See how the dreaded “Evil Dead” technique gets you hitting arm triangles on young gym rats twice your size!
The Low Smash Knee Ride that will elevate your school status from “Steamrolled” to “Steamroller”!
Develop crushing mount maintenance and attacking strategies to keep even the most erratic guys on the mat under control… and how to use any of their escape attempts against them!
See why avoiding the mount and back in favor of just hanging out in side control is a terrible mistake (and how to gain the confidence to make these superior positions part of your “go to” game!)
Learn Python-tight back control techniques that will allow you to control and reclaim the back even when your opponents have a strong defense.
How to avoid stacking (and getting folded up like an accordion) when your opponent counters your armbar from guard – and finish it every time!
Apply the “sneak attack” lapel choke with ease, and your training partners will be sweating every time you pass to cross-sides!
Learn simple techniques for finishing the kimura and arm bar from top even if your opponent defends with a “death grip” (no more wasting energy or losing position trying to wrestle with their arms…!)
And a lot more…
And you can see why professional instructors love the course as well…
So, here’s the deal:
Hopefully you get the idea that I was serious about providing a ton of solid content in this set that you can use right away in your game!
