What I like best about this product is that it solves all of the difficulties I had with previous books on stand-up comedy and comedy writing that I read before purchasing the Killer Stand-up System. This guide was the first, and certainly still the finest, investment I’ve made in my online business. I have to specify online since obtaining three years of classical acting instruction is superior to this product. However, only just. I’m joking, Mum.
I have discussed how I read a ton of books about creating and delivering humor, as well as how to learn stand-up comedy, but this one blows them all away.
What’s the catch?
In a nutshell, this book will teach you everything you need to know about creating and performing stand-up comedy. But we were too terrified to inquire. (I had no choice.)
I really like how this product is organized. For starters, it establishes the milieu in which the work was written. We learn about the author’s beginnings and how he suffered as a young comic before going on to become a highly paid comedian in a short period of time. This struck a chord with me.
There’s also a bit of a history lesson explaining where the Killer Stand-up System fits into comedy growth and how it varies from all the other comedy writing and performance guidelines and books.
Steve also tells numerous combat stories from his own experiences, giving you the impression that you’re not alone in your adventures while you’re out there.
At the time of writing, there were interactive audio segments containing interviews with other comics as well as excerpts from Steve’s own shows. There are around 60 multimedia segments. It truly immerses you in the learning process of stand-up comedy.
What you actually receive…
There are two key books on humor writing and comic performance. These two novels alone are worth the price of admission. They are incredibly detailed and comprehensive, totaling 556 pages. That would suffice for me. (Editor’s note: this course has been further split down and is now entirely online, as opposed to the two big eBooks that I initially purchased.)
You will also receive a brief booklet titled “Street Joke Secrets for Professional Comedians.” This article discusses the advantages of being able to find and modify street jokes. Not only that, but it discusses how and where to employ them in your act, as well as in which markets.
Finally, one of my favorite freebies is a one-of-a-kind piece of software known as “The Comedy Evaluator Pro.” This program determines how amusing your stuff is in an impartial and precise manner. It delivers a minute-by-minute analytical review and recommendations on how to enhance your act. (This was shown in the documentary “I Am Comic”).
The major aim of this book is for aspiring professional comedians; it goes into great detail on studying stand-up comedy. Also present is a comic veteran. If professional speaking is your thing, these approaches can be easily adopted.
This tutorial also does not address the numerous methods in which an aspiring performer may advertise and sell themselves both online and offline. Which, in retrospect, is a good thing.
It also makes no mention of any of the major international comedy festivals, such as “The Edinburgh Fringe” in Scotland, “Just For Laughs” in Canada, or “The Melbourne International Comedy Festival” in Australia.
However, the benefit of not adding any of that information is that there are eventually more pages dedicated to the creation and delivery of comic content. Many books on comedy writing appear to lack focus.
That’s a good thing, since, as I previously stated, some of the other comedy books I’ve read don’t devote nearly enough time to writing and performance and instead leap right into creating sitcoms, comedic spec screenplays, and one-man shows.
If someone asked me where they should start learning stand-up comedy or developing content as a hilarious speaker, I would tell them to start with The Killer Stand-up System.
